Session 1
Integrating TOK in the Classroom (Full Day) DP/CP
Attention - DP Coordinators and TOK teachers!
Do you want to support the successful integration of TOK across the curriculum? Do you need support providing accessible training on TOK that you don’t have to create? Do you want to provide your IB teachers with confidence to engage with TOK?
This training will provide you with activities that you can take back to your school this week! It is flexible and could be implemented over a series of team meetings or in a half-day professional development session. It is structured so that a teacher new to IB and an experienced IBEN member will walk away with opportunities for their classrooms.
Imagine your IB students working with teachers that use the language of TOK, have a framework of TOK as it applies to their course, and work to support them as they cognitively wrestle with the Prescribed Titles. Bring your teachers to this training and give them the time and space to learn, reflect, and apply TOK.
Casey Swanson serves as an IB DP coordinator and Psychology/TOK teacher at Plymouth High School. He is an active IBEN member leading workshops in Coordination, Leading the Learning, and Psychology. In addition he supports schools as a consultant and as a team member on school visits to candidate schools.
Session 2
Program Development Plans and SI (Full Day) PYP/MYP/CP/DP
How would you like to create comprehensive plans for developing IB programmes in conjunction with school improvement and district development plans? This session is designed for school leadership teams and district personnel, throughout the continuum of IB programmes, to explore the new programme development process and philosophy for programme evaluation. Participants will explore the IB standards and practices and learn how to create inspiring and effective programme development plans that contribute to student success and support ongoing growth of IB programmes. Learn from IB educators who have extensive experience on evaluation teams at this year’s fall symposium.

Session 3
Libraries, Research & ATL - Klaudia Janek (Full Day) PYP/MYP/CP/DP
How does the school library support an IB curriculum?
The IBO has a guide titled “The Ideal Libraries Guide for Schools.” There is an emphasis on “for Schools” because it is an invitation for collaboration with the school librarian (or media specialist), teachers and administrators. The Ideal Libraries Guide sets the foundation for carrying out some of the details in IB Standards & Practices across the Continuum. The most obvious focus for the school library is research within the curriculum and major projects for the PYP, MYP, DP and CP.
Bring your school based team that includes your librarian, mixed level and subject area teachers, Coordinators and administrators
to explore how your school library contributes to every ATL (Thinking Skills, Social Skills, Communication Skills, Self-Management Skills, and Research Sklls). We will do a deep dive into Research Skills by exploring resources that Michigan students have access to. There will be a focus on Information Literacy and Media Literacy across the IB Continuum in a spirit of collaboration and co-teaching. Discussions will touch on OPCVL, academic integrity, the importance of curating resources, sharing tools
We will also focus on how you can create a culture of reading at your school with connections to the curriculum, to ATLs and the IB Learner Profile. See real examples that can be replicated at your school. While the focus of the workshop is on the IB program, you will see that with a strong school library program, ALL students will be impacted.
If your school does not have a certified school librarian, we urge you to attend this workshop to share experiences, ideas, challenges and successes in the areas of reading and research. It will also give you an opportunity to explore research tools that can help strengthen your implementation of ATL skills, Learner Profile attributes and enrich your PYP, MYP, DP or CP authorizations and evaluations.
Klaudia Janek is a K-12 ND certified school librarian. She earned her Master’s of Library and Information Science degree from Wayne State in 2002. Klaudia became an IBEN educator after attending a Diploma Programme Academy in 2011 that allowed her to become a Workshop Facilitator, Authorization Team member and application reader. She currently facilitates various workshops for IB librarians and the DP Extended Essay. Klaudia has been part of a global curriculum revision team and a DP workshop designer for several workshops. She is past-president of the Michigan Association of School Librarians, current chair of the IB MASL Special Interest Group, the Michigan Ambassador for Copyright & Creativity and general research enthusiast.
